What is auto insurance and what does it cover?

Bodily injury liability pays the medical expenses of others who are injured; propertydamage liability pays to repair or replace their cars or other damaged property. The amount of liability coverage is usually expressed as three numbers, such as 100/300/50.

A single car insurance policy can include several types of coverage. To decide what to buy, it’s important to research the options available, which types of coverage are required and how different forms of coverage work.
Keep in mind that your policy covers you, the licensed members of your household who are listed on the policy, and usually anyone else you give permission to drive the car.

Car Insurance is for Financial Protection

If you carry PLPD only on your car, it is possible you will never file a claim. Insurance is a game of chance. Maybe your car did get damaged and you have car insurance, but no coverage to fix it. It is at this point in time when you feel your car insurance is worthless, but you get what you pay for. PLPD does not cover physical damage to your car. It does however, offer you protection for other types of losses.

What is Car insurance

Understanding auto insurance—the basics

Auto insurance is a contract between you and the insurance company that protects you against financial loss in the event of an accident or theft. In exchange for your paying a premium, the insurance company agrees to pay your losses as outlined in your policy.
Auto insurance provides coverage for:
  • Property – such as damage to or theft of your car
  • Liability – your legal responsibility to others for bodily injury or property damage
  • Medical – the cost of treating injuries, rehabilitation and sometimes lost wages and funeral expenses
Basic personal auto insurance is mandated by most U.S. states, and laws vary. Auto insurance coverages are priced individually (a la carte) to let you customize coverage amounts to suit your exact needs and budget.
Policies are generally issued for six-month or one-year timeframes and are renewable. The insurance company sends a notice when it’s time to renew the policy and pay your premium.
Auto accidents can happen, even to the best of us. An auto insurance policy can help cover repairs to your vehicle and medical costs in the event of an accident. Think of it as your firewall against economic disaster should you be found at fault for property damage or injuries to other people.
